If you're planning a family getaway these winter school holidays, the NSW North Coast offers far more than beautiful beaches. Stretching from ancient rainforests to dramatic headlands and historic landmarks, the region is home to a collection of ranger-guided experiences that invite families to reconnect with nature while discovering places many visitors simply drive past.

Hosted by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, these guided activities combine outdoor adventure with fascinating stories about wildlife, Aboriginal culture, local history and the unique environments that make the North Coast such a rewarding destination.

For younger children, Dorrigo National Park offers the opportunity to become a Junior Ranger for the day, exploring one of Australia's World Heritage-listed rainforests through games, wildlife discovery and hands-on activities. Budding birdwatchers can also join expert rangers to learn how to identify some of the region's colourful rainforest birds by their calls and behaviour.

Further south, Sea Acres National Park in Port Macquarie provides an unforgettable walk beneath towering rainforest trees along its accessible boardwalk. Families wanting something a little different can also join a guided Rockpool Ramble at nearby Shelly Beach, where marine creatures, shorebirds and coastal ecosystems become an outdoor classroom.

History lovers are equally well catered for. At Hat Head National Park, families can climb inside the iconic Smoky Cape Lighthouse, the highest lighthouse in New South Wales, while hearing stories from its maritime past before taking in sweeping coastal views.

Nearby, Trial Bay Gaol offers an engaging journey into Australia's history through guided children's tours featuring storytelling, interactive activities and treasure hunts that bring this remarkable heritage site to life.

These experiences provide an ideal excuse to swap city traffic for rainforest walks, ocean air and unforgettable family adventures. Whether you're spending a long weekend or a full school holiday exploring the Mid North Coast, they're a wonderful reminder that some of the best family experiences happen outdoors.

Bookings are recommended, particularly during the busy winter school holiday period.
