What's the difference between a magician and a mentalist? A mentalist doesn't do lame card tricks or say, "I snap my fingers", "I say the magic words", "I blow on my hand", "I sprinkle the magic dust", “I wave my magic wand”, or with a goofy, knowing grin say, "Is this your card?"
A mentalist seemingly reads minds, and a good mentalist will wrap a compelling story around their work, which Scott Silven is skilfully doing in The Lost Things at the Sydney Opera House.
Silven reflects on the darkness and mystery of his past to launch his effects.
What has each of us lost? Have we really lost it or, like everything else, is it just our illusion? Do our perceptions change actuality into our reality, a biased interpretation of the facts so that we can emotionally cope with a memory?

Silven incorporates psychology and science into his show and his explanations are articulate.
Mentalists’ pre-show work is usually done on the sly, but Silven’s is open and in plain sight. He performs some popular family favourites such as a variety of predictions and The Spirit Touch. The Force is with him for most of the show. During the performance he did utilise a couple of "outs" which we didn't mind.
It’s the compelling narrative and Silven’s story telling ability that makes The Lost Things so special. You can’t help but be engaged.

Still, it left me wondering if Vernet was included near the beginning and if Bridget had previously appeared in the show. However, I’m fairly sure that Moe, Larry and Curly were not in the cast.
If you crave a compelling evening at the theatre and want an amazing experience that will have you wondering and impressed, with a heap of audience involvement, put The Lost Things on your list.
