From Home to Holidays: Navigating International Travel During the Festive Season
The festive season is that treasured time of year when the sounds of carols fill every street corner and markets offer last-minute gifts. It is also a season of worldwide visits for many; as families come together once again after being scattered over different geographies across the globe. Traveling during the holidays is an enriching experience, but it does have its challenges. Everything from trip planning to managing crowds during the holidays requires preparation.
#1 Planning Your Travel Wisely:
Having a stress-free experience with traveling over the holidays comes down to starting early and planning thoroughly. Begin with your advance bookings for flights and lodging, as the prices rise astronomically closer to this festive time.
Flexibility can also mean traveling on non-peak days when airports, roads, and attractions could be far less crowded with little or no waiting. Check the holiday customs of your destination at this time, as well as local celebrations to greet you upon arrival, and make sure that all your travel documents are updated: passport and visa (if necessary).
#2 Packing Gifts for the Holidays:
Packing for an international holiday can be a bit more challenging if you're bringing gifts, like surprise Christmas gift hampers for relatives or friends. It's important to familiarise yourself with the customs regulations of your destination to avoid any issues at the airport.
If you are flying, pack lightly so that gifts can be nestled within without needing to push and shove your bags around for repacking; also plan on wrapping once at the destination or bracing yourself with bubble wrap should these items get shaken up during security checks. Carry essentials- This is recommended for things like travel adaptors, chargers and your information should anything go wrong.
#3 Managing Challenges Airport and Flight:
Airports are notoriously crowded during the holidays, so leave yourself plenty of time in case there is a long wait at check-in or security spend. There may be layovers for up to 10 hours, so pack enough food and drinks as well as entertainment (books/movies) etc. You may even gift yourself with earphones for the trip.
Track your flight on airline apps and purchase travel insurance to mitigate the possibility of surprise complications. Travelling on long hauls, make sure you wear a cozy outfit and drink plenty of water as well as watch some inflight entertainment to keep the journey enjoyable.
#4 Keeping Safe on the Road:
Since the holiday season is right around the same time as cold and flu season, it's important to remember that you still need to take care of yourself when travelling. Bring hand sanitiser, and wipes for those crowded spaces. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy on the run even though the festive temptation is so strong.
