About Man on Fire: Visions of Nebuchadnezzar

A major new exhibition is set to open at Bundanon, bringing together the work of one of Australia’s most important modern artists with a powerful contemporary response.

Man on Fire: Visions of Nebuchadnezzar pairs the iconic Nebuchadnezzar series by Arthur Boyd with a significant new commission by leading contemporary artist Shaun Gladwell. The exhibition runs from 4 July to 11 October 2026 in the Bundanon Art Museum.

Curated by Sophie O'Brien, the exhibition presents an expansive selection of Boyd’s works, originally created in the 1960s during his time in the UK. These paintings, drawings and etchings explore the Biblical story of King Nebuchadnezzar, a ruler cast out into the wilderness after being consumed by pride.

Accommodation Illaroo

There is no shortage of rental accommodation at Illaroo and you might like to consider these options:

THE RYE HOUSE MELROSE
THE RYE HOUSE

Luxury self-contained farmhouse set on the historic property "Melross" in Kangaroo Valley

Circa 1874 house to rent in Kangaroo Valley
CIRCA 1874 TRANQUIL HOUSE

Beautiful tranquil house and garden adjacent to the Shoalhaven River and Nowra

Boyd’s interpretation moves beyond the religious narrative, becoming a deeply personal reflection shaped by his pacifist beliefs and the political tensions of the Vietnam War era. The works examine ego, power and the fragility of the human condition, themes that remain strikingly relevant.

Alongside these historic pieces, Shaun Gladwell’s newly commissioned work responds directly to Boyd’s vision. Created during a residency in the Shoalhaven, the work draws on the natural landscape that was central to Boyd’s life and practice.

Gladwell is known for his moving image works that explore the body, endurance and environment. Here, he engages with the Nebuchadnezzar story through a contemporary lens, examining transformation, masculinity and the relationship between humans and the natural world.

Bringing these two artists together creates a compelling dialogue across generations. The exhibition explores ideas of downfall and renewal, power and exile, and the ongoing search for meaning through art.

For Sydney readers looking for a worthwhile cultural escape, Bundanon offers a strong reason to head south, with this exhibition set to be one of the standout art events on the NSW calendar this year.
