What happens when some of the greatest songs that were made famous by male artists are placed in the hands of three female performers who have different backgrounds?
Emma Mylott (rock), Jacinta Gulicano (pop) and Tia Gigliotti (R&B) have come together to belt out some of the classics, opening with That's Life.
The show celebrates the men — fathers, brothers, mentors, partners and exes who have influenced women’s lives, so it by no means excludes men. In fact, much of the frequent audience participation is about, and includes the males in the room and what the women think of the men after they’ve answered a few questions (women always have questions to test us out). I felt like saying “It’s a trap!” Admittedly, the men who were featured sucked up and the females seemed to buy it. There were a lot of laughs, as there always are when gender communication issues arise. Mylott, Gulicano and Gigliotti know how to work an audience.
There are some post 1980 songs that I didn't recognise.

The ones I did know, and even younger audience members would recognise, are When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge, American Pie by Don McLean, Piano Man by Billy Joel, Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye, It's a Man's Man's Man's World by James Brown, Thriller by Michael Jackson and Your Song by Elton John. Performed in a lower key than the originals are Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Frankie Valli), Night Fever and Stayin' Alive by The Bee Gees.
There are many more songs and they finished with It's a Long Way to the Top by AC/DC, The Horses by Daryl Braithwaite, Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool and You're the Voice by John Farnham. By the last couple of songs we were up dancing.
Each performer has a powerful set of pipes and their harmonies are sublime. It’s as if they’d been performing together since they were born.
This is a world class act, so if you can, get along to The Grand Electric to experience Les Femmes.
