Sydney Walks: Hermitage Foreshore Track Eastern Suburbs

On a beautiful Sydney winter's day I decided to take the Hermitage Foreshore Track walk from Rose Bay to Nielsen Park, and this is one walk I'll be repeating many times from now on. It's a stunning walk with amazing photo opportunities, places to sit, contemplate and just enjoy being alive. The track starts at the end of Bayview Hill Road (see map) and continues for 1.8km each way. There are a number of steps to navigate so you need some level of fitness.

On the day that I chose to walk it was a little breezy with a cold bite to it, however the sky was blue and it really was a lovely walk. I'm always in heaven when I'm in nature, and living in the inner city it's good to know this wonderful bush walk isn't too far from where I live.

There are a number of secluded beaches along the way including Tingara beach and Milk beach and believe me, it's a delightful place to go and soak up the sun. Considering how beautiful this track is, it wasn't crowded on my walk on a Sunday morning, however I left quite early. I did meet up with more people on the return trip though.

The track is made up of board walks which are well maintained and as you follow the track with the harbour next to you, there will be plenty of places you will want to stop and just dwell in the beauty that surrounds you. Occasionally you will spot a sea plane overhead.

For those wanting to stop, you will find park benches scattered along the way, or you may find yourself a nice rock to sit on. The colour of the water from this angle was stunning.

Greycliffe Gardens

As well as the spectacular scenery there are a couple of heritage homes to walk by and look at including Greycliffe House (above) built in 1852 and Strickland House built in the 1850's and home to Sydney's second Lord Mayor, John Hosking.

At the end of Hermitage Foreshore Walk you will arrive at Nielsen Park where you can stop and laze on the beautiful beach or find a spot at the cafe for a meal.

Nielsen Park Restaurant and cafe is a fabulous place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I had corn fritters with smoked salmon which was extremely tasty. As you can imagine on a Sunday morning the venue was very busy and I was lucky to get a table. Seating is inside or outside.

Following my walk there I headed back the same way to enjoy more of the beautiful scenery and nature.

The photo below doesn't give justice to the size of this bamboo I noticed near Greycliffe House.

Finally, I'll finish with the photo above of the Nuns Cemetery which you will pass on the Hermitage Foreshore track.
