Alibi bar at the Ovolo in Wolloomooloo Features Plant-based Bar Snacks

Alibi Sydney

If you’re looking for a way to improve your waist, your waste, and your environmental credentials, then there’s a new bar to put on your list.

Alibi bar at the Ovolo in Wolloomooloo features plant-based bar snacks that can satisfy even the most meaty of meat-eaters.

In case it helps the as-yet unconverted, the cocktails are delicious. The Negroni Spritz (a combination of two of my favourites) wafts out in a cloud of dry ice.

For entrée the bao buns were delicious, with pulled jackfruit, kohlrabi slaw and black garlic cashews. The chick poppers were surprisingly moorish, served with aioli. They really had the texture of fried chicken bites.

The Beyond Burger is a traditional quarter pounder, and is really filling, while the tacos come with pork, chicken or duck, along with guac and slaw. And yes, its all jackfruit, and perfect for sharing.

I know that many committed carnivores (like me) don’t necessarily have a problem with vegan food, but can’t wrap their heads around the idea of food “pretending” to be something that they’re not.

But I think the trick here is not to think of it as a masquerade, but just a way to make these protein alternatives more familiar and more acceptable.

The surroundings at the Ovolo certainly help. There’s a relaxed yet fun vibe for which Ovolo is known, with large private spaces for friends to hang out. It’s a place you’ll want to spend more time, have another drink, and some extra guilt-free snacks.
