Looking for something a little different to do with the kids these spring school holidays? NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is running a series of ranger-guided activities across Sydney’s national parks, giving families a chance to swap some screen time for wildlife, bushwalking, creativity and outdoor adventure.

Led by NPWS Discovery rangers, the programs combine nature, history and hands-on activities designed to encourage curiosity and help children build confidence outdoors.

Become a Junior Ranger at Bobbin Head

At Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, children can discover what it’s like to be a park ranger during a guided Junior Ranger experience at Bobbin Head.

The hands-on activities introduce kids to local wildlife and the work involved in protecting the natural environment, with plenty of opportunities to explore and learn along the way.

When: 1 and 8 October

Get Creative in Royal National Park

Royal National Park is hosting a Creativity in Nature Junior Ranger program combining art, play and environmental discovery.

Children will create artworks using materials found in the bush while learning about local plants and animals and how park rangers help protect them.

When: 30 September – Earth theme; 7 October – Water theme

Little Lyrebirds

For younger explorers, Little Lyrebirds is designed especially for children under six.

Through sensory play, creative games and nature exploration, little ones can discover local ecosystems while developing problem-solving skills and learning some basic outdoor safety.

When: 30 September, 1, 7 and 8 October

Learn Ranger Skills

Older children can put their outdoor skills to the test during the Royal National Park Ranger Skills program.

Junior rangers will learn navigation and bush survival tips, explore different ranger roles and discover more about protecting the park and its wildlife.

When: 1, 7 and 8 October

Walk Lady Carrington Drive

There’s something for the whole family on the guided nature walk along historic Lady Carrington Drive in Royal National Park.

Following the Hacking River, the walk explores the park’s plants, wildlife and ecosystems. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, wallabies, echidnas and yellow-tailed black cockatoos along the way.

When: 1 and 8 October

Greycliffe House Sydney

Step Back in Time at Greycliffe House

For a mix of history and spectacular Sydney scenery, families can explore Greycliffe House and Nielsen Park in Sydney Harbour National Park.

The guided heritage tour takes visitors through the grand 1850s Greycliffe House in Vaucluse and shares stories of the families who once lived there. Afterwards, the grounds make a beautiful spot for a picnic overlooking Sydney Harbour.

When: 2 and 11 October

With activities ranging from junior ranger adventures to wildlife walks and heritage tours, Sydney’s national parks offer plenty of reasons to get outdoors during the spring break.
