There's something undeniably special about enjoying a drink beside Sydney Harbour, with the Opera House rising above you and the Harbour Bridge providing one of the world's most recognisable backdrops. From Friday 6 November 2026, visitors will have another reason to linger a little longer when the much-loved Opera Bar Sydney reopens following its most significant transformation to date.

Under the direction of Applejack Hospitality, the iconic waterfront venue has undergone an extensive redesign, introducing a sophisticated new look, an entirely refreshed food and drinks offering, and a renewed focus on celebrating the people and producers who make Sydney such an extraordinary place to eat and drink.

The reopening also completes the revitalisation of the Sydney Opera House's harbourside dining precinct, following the July opening of neighbouring all-day eatery, Winnie's.

A Fresh New Look for Opera Bar - an Iconic Sydney Venue

Award-winning Australian design studio Luchetti Krelle has reimagined Opera Bar with a contemporary aesthetic that complements its extraordinary location.

The venue's familiar blue nautical colour scheme has made way for a rich, deep green palette, creating a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere. New furniture, lighting, internal and terrace bars, and a fully electric kitchen are among the significant improvements.

While the interiors have changed considerably, the essence of Opera Bar remains the same: an inviting place where Sydneysiders and visitors can gather, unwind and enjoy one of the city's most spectacular waterfront settings.

The redesign reflects Applejack Hospitality's vision of creating a destination that feels both distinctly Sydney and welcoming to everyone, whether stopping by for a casual afternoon drink, meeting friends for lunch or enjoying a pre-theatre meal.

A Menu Inspired by Sydney's Multicultural Neighbourhoods

Sydney's diverse food culture takes centre stage in the new Opera Bar menu, developed by Applejack Culinary Director Patrick Friesen and Opera Bar Precinct Executive Head Chef Daniel Cooper.

Rather than focusing on a single cuisine, the chefs have drawn inspiration from the flavours, traditions and independent food producers found throughout Sydney's suburbs.

The market kitchen concept features four distinct culinary sections, bringing together Asian and Middle Eastern influences, freshly prepared pizzas and modern Australian favourites.

Diners can enjoy pork spring rolls made by Bankstown's Banh Mi Bay Ngo, served with fresh herbs, lettuce and fish sauce, or falafel from Bondi's Basta, accompanied by amba and pickled turnip.

Sydney Rock Oysters

Seafood lovers can indulge in Sydney rock oysters with mignonette and locally produced hot sauce from The Fermentalists, while the prawn pizza combines miso, Calabrian chilli and roasted shellfish oil for an inventive twist on a familiar favourite.

For those craving a classic Australian seaside meal, fish and chips arrive in a beer batter made with Young Henrys Newtowner.

Other local producers featured include La Stella, known for its Italian mozzarella made in Auburn, and Rock Oyster Depot, which supplies Sydney rock oysters.

Even the presentation has a distinctly local touch, with handmade plates created by potter Sam Gordon. Different coloured rims identify the menu's culinary sections, adding another thoughtful element to the dining experience.

As Patrick Friesen explains:

"Sydney is the most delicious city on earth. You can travel around the world just by moving through its suburbs, and that's what we wanted to capture at Opera Bar."

It's an approach that celebrates Sydney not simply as a destination, but as a collection of vibrant neighbourhoods, each contributing something unique to the city's food culture.

Cocktails with a Distinctly Australian Personality

The drinks menu has also received a complete refresh, with a strong emphasis on Australian producers, NSW wines and imaginative cocktails inspired by familiar local flavours.

Created under the direction of Applejack Group Beverage Manager Matt Johnson and Opera Bar Precinct Beverage Manager James 'Rusty' Russell, the selection combines established favourites with playful new creations.

Among the signature cocktails is a frozen mango and coconut creation inspired by the nostalgic Mango Weis Bar, made with Sydney's Red Mill Rum.

The Cheeky Lamington offers another distinctly Australian interpretation, combining coconut tequila and white chocolate, finished with a lamington from Sydney's TOKYO Lamington.

A refreshing take on the Hugo Spritz features Papa Salt Coastal Gin.

Beer enthusiasts will find a selection of NSW and Australian favourites, including Young Henrys, Stone & Wood, Hawke's, Mountain Culture, Yulli's and Heaps Normal.

The wine list highlights celebrated regions such as the Hunter Valley, Orange, Mudgee, Tumbarumba and the Canberra District, complemented by Champagne and Provence rosé.

Exclusive Applejack wines include Mercer Wines Pinot Grigio and Rosato from Orange, alongside Margan 'Otis' Shiraz from the Hunter Valley.

For guests who prefer to skip alcohol, a dedicated collection of non-alcoholic cocktails, wines and beers ensures there are plenty of appealing alternatives.

Live Music and Art by the Harbour

Opera Bar has long been more than a place to eat and drink, and its reopening continues that tradition.

Live music will feature every evening, curated by Arts Matter, adding to the lively atmosphere of the waterfront precinct.

Art will also play an important role in the renewed venue experience, with a special exhibition by sculptor Tan Alridge on display at the southern end of the dining precinct from 10 November to 13 December 2026.

To mark the transformation, Opera Bar and Winnie's will host a special celebration from 6pm on Tuesday 10 November.

The combination of contemporary dining, live entertainment, public art and breathtaking harbour views reinforces Opera Bar's connection to the Sydney Opera House and the city's wider cultural landscape.

A New Chapter for Opera Bar Sydney

For more than a decade, Opera Bar has been a favourite meeting place for locals and a memorable stop for visitors discovering Sydney.

Its latest transformation promises to build on that reputation, combining the familiar magic of its harbourside location with a contemporary dining experience that reflects the city's creativity and cultural diversity.

Whether it's a leisurely lunch overlooking the water, sunset cocktails with friends or a relaxed meal before an Opera House performance, the reimagined Opera Bar looks set to remain one of Sydney's most appealing waterfront destinations.

And with summer just around the corner, the timing couldn't be better.
