Sydney Chic Talks to Pitt Street Dental Centre - About Teeth Whitening

Thanks to technology, teeth whitening is now becoming a common practice so we asked Pitt Street, Dental Centre - leaders in this field - what’s the latest in teeth whitening.

Why is tooth whitening the #1 requested cosmetic dental procedure?

In just one appointment, your teeth are dramatically whitened 8-15 Shades Whiter. Whiter teeth can make you look years younger, boost your confidence and self esteem. A whitened smile oozes good health and vitality. This makes such a significant difference to the overall appearance of a smile. It is safe, fast, makes a dramatic difference and is very affordable.

How is it done?

Tooth whitening is a procedure that whitens teeth, removes stains and discolouration. A dental professional takes before photographs before you start and also matches the colour of your teeth to a shade guide. Your teeth are then isolated from your gums with a liquid gel that covers and protects them. The Zoom gel is then applied to your teeth and the Zoom Whitespeed light applied - this process is repeated 4 times. Once complete, everything is removed and an after photo is taken and then the colour of your teeth is checked again to record the difference.

Are there any procedures needed before your teeth are whitened?

Yes, if a patient hasn't had a professional clean, it’s best to have one first. We recommend a hygiene visit every six months. The scale and clean procedure moves stains, tarter build-up and gets your gums healthy and pristine. If a patient needs fillings or restorations, we recommend - in most cases - whitening first and then doing the permanent restorations so the colour matches perfectly.

Does whitening always work?

Teeth whitening works on everyone provided you have your natural enamel. It will not whiten veneers, crowns and other restorations.

What is the quickest way to whiten teeth?

We use Philips Zoom! Whitespeed because it’s the quickest, easiest way to effectively whiten your teeth. It is the world’s number one most requested teeth whitening system. Philips Zoom Whitespeed is the only system available to a dentist that has a variable intensity setting so each treatment can be customized to maximize patient comfort.

The system also includes desensitizers to help minimize any sensitivity that may occur and protect your enamel. This dentist-supervised, in-office procedure is safe, effective and clinically proven to whiten up to eight shades - for a brighter, whiter smile in just one appointment.

Does it hurt?

Some people can be a little sensitive so we recommend taking Panadeine or similar prior to the treatment.

Do you have to have whitening done in the clinic or are home treatments effective?

We recommend professional in office teeth whitening. Come into our practice and walk out 90 minutes later with a dramatically whitened smile. Patients want effective, proven results and Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed offers that.

As for take home whitening, yes there is this option. We make custom made trays for you and give you Philips Zoom DayWhite or NiteWhite to use. However, it will take longer and the results will not be as dramatic,
