The Year of the Rat celebrations at Market City

Year of the Rat 2020

Sydney’s renowned retail hub, Market City is excited to be marking the Lunar New Year in style with a series of unique events and dining experiences, delivering fun for all the family this January!

Head down to the premier retail hub in the heart of Chinatown on either 25 or 26 January to enjoy jaw dropping lion dances from Jin Wu Koon on high poles, a group who combine traditional Chinese elements with incredible, high flying stunts in their spectacular performances. Chinese Youth League will also bring their roaming lion dance to visit Market City retailers on 25 January. Lion Dance performers mimic a lion’s gestures and emotions to bring luck, fortune and prosperity to the places they perform. Additionally, every shopper that spends over $25 will have the opportunity to receive a bespoke piece of calligraphy designed by one of Australia’s best pensmiths to take home as a souvenir.

Visitors can also marvel at the traditional decorations throughout the centre and head to the 1909 Dining Precinct to discover a range of delicious restaurants serving special dishes to mark the start of the New Year. These include traditional Japanese ‘Teishoku’ at Yayoi, spicy noodles at Mr Meng, world-class hotpot at Dolar Shop and three bespoke banquet options at Beijing Impressions including spicy hot crab, French lamb chops and crisp jellyfish in special sauce (available from 24th  Jan – 8th Feb only). All dishes will be available for the whole month of January to keep up the spirit of celebration.
