Sydney International Piano Competition

Marking its 40th Anniversary, the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia will celebrate with an exciting national recital program in 2017, showcasing some of the world’s finest international and Australian talent.

The program of events includes an all new 40th Anniversary National Recital Series from past winners of the People’s Choice Award at the 2016, 2008 and 2000 Sydney International Piano Competition, a National Recital Tour by 2016 Competition winner Mr Andrey Gugnin and recitals by Mr Tony Lee, awarded Best Australian Pianist at the 2016 Competition.


Tony Lee Piano

The new 40th Anniversary National Recital Series commences 23-28 March with performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide by popular Chinese-American pianist Mr Ming Xie, winner of the Rex Hobcroft People’s Choice Prize sponsored by Yamaha at the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition.


Ms Ayako Uehara

The second recital tour in the series will welcome Ms Ayako Uehara from Japan, the 2000 People’s Choice Award and Second Prize winner, for performances in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in June 2017. Immediately after her success in Sydney Ms Uehara won First Prize in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition which makes her return to Australia highly anticipated.


Mr Konstantin Shamray

The third recital tour in the 40th Anniversary National Recital Series, by Mr Konstantin Shamray, 2008 People’s Choice Award winner and First Prize winner will take place in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane with additional recitals in Hobart, Perth and Auckland in October 2017.


Andrew Gugnin

Andrey Gugnin, Russian-born winner of the 2016 Sydney International Piano Competition will undertake a highly anticipated two-month National Recital tour across all states, the Northern Territory and regional areas from 30 June - 2 September 2017. Audiences will be treated to spectacular pianism featuring Bach, Schubert, Stravinsky, Liszt and more.

Concluding the 40th year celebrations, Sydney-born Tony Lee, awarded Best Australian Pianist at the 2016 Competition, will perform in selected venues across New South Wales and Victoria.

Artistic Director of the Competition, Piers Lane AO said ‘The 40th Anniversary year is an important milestone for the Sydney International Piano Competition. The longevity of the Competition highlights our commitment to supporting the international careers of top young pianists, our success at identifying those pianists, and our concern to promote the highest ideals in Australian pianism.’

These tours enable Australians to observe the progress of some of the competitors they have chosen as their favourites and to inspire emerging young Australian talent.’ said Lane.
