Tips for decluttering and organizing the wardrobe

Tips for decluttering and organizing the wardrobe

Have you neglected your wardrobe to the point that your organisational system is the fact that there isn’t one at all? This might not entirely be the case for you, but you might just want to declutter and organise your wardrobe but don’t quite know where to start or how to go about it.

Here are some tips on how to tidy up that wardrobe

#1 Be Brutal!

Let’s be honest, we all find ourselves clinging onto items we do not need, “just in case” Decluttering and organising your wardrobe is the perfect time to say goodbye to this habit. The best way to do this is remove all items from your wardrobe and make three piles; one for items you want to keep, one for items you are unsure of and one for items you definitely do not want. Believe me I treat this exercise the same way I treat my inbox; delete and folders! This way you can start building your wardrobe from scratch and keep it minimalistic.

For the items you are unsure of, you can then add them to an external storage. – Which leads me to my next tip!

#2 Consider External Storage Options

A good idea would be to consider investing in external storage so that you can place your unsure or you less frequently used items away until they’re needed again. Companies such as Hire A Mover are excellent to use for this as they have Mobile Storage units. The removalists come to your property with the mobile storage pod to collect your belongings, safely store it back at their facility, and will return it to you when you are ready. It is a secured facility that is monitored 24/7, centrally located and accessible 7 days a week. This service stores your belongings from a few days to years and is affordable. It makes moving and storing just that much easier and less stressful knowing you have professionals to help you out.

#3 Come Prepared

Ever find yourself half-way through cleaning your room, knee-deep in piles of clothing and regretting your decision? The best way to combat this is choosing a day to organise your wardrobe where you have minimal errands planned and can designate 2-3 hours to the task. That way you won’t feel distracted or overwhelmed. Make sure to also have essentials like shopping bags for items you don’t want to keep, a tape measure for measuring out space for new storage options and a full-length mirror to try on clothing and determine what items you want to keep. By the time you are finished you will be much happier and it is easier to mix and match items when they are all aligned.

Once I have had my wardrobe cleanse I then like to sort my clothes into groups of colours, then those colours into sub-groups, i.e. jackets, tops, pants, skirts. That makes it really easy to find items to put together quickly.

#4 Donate to Charity

Have you considered that clearing out your wardrobe could mean doing something beneficial for others? With the items you do not want, consider donating the suitable ones to charity. With heaps of clothing being put into landfill a year, you are doing something worthwhile for others whilst also contributing to the environment. Another way to do it is to have a clothing sale and donate all proceeds to a charity of your choice.
