Restaurant Review: JamVybz Jamaican Restaurant

Dreadlocks, Bob Marley, English/Spanish influences, reggae music, steel drums, the West Indian cricket team and a corny old vaudeville joke were basically all I knew about Jamaica, so I was looking forward to my first visit to a Jamaican restaurant.

With a group of acquaintances, I ventured to JamVybz in Glebe.

We eventually dug in to a variety of dishes starting with Honey BBQ Jerk Chicken Wings which was a very tasty opener.

The Curried Goat with potatoes, carrots, salad and coconut rice was nicely cooked but the proportion of bones to meat was overwhelming. The meat that I did get was tasty and the texture perfect.

Part of the main course from the $33 set menu was more Jerk Chicken which again was delicious.

Dessert was Jamaican Rum Chocolate Cake which was quite tasty and moistened with a lot of rum.

The atmosphere was appealing if you don’t mind noise, which suited JamVybz; it was part of the overall experience. There was definitely a sense of colour and movement, apart from the speed of service.

Being a Saturday night, it was understandable that the service might have been very slow even though we pre-ordered a few days before. The wait for the food might, hopefully, be less during the week. However, I did look at a couple of review sites to check on feedback regarding the speed of customer service and patrons also remarked that the wait for food was inordinately long. Perhaps they also went on a busy Friday or Saturday night.

Overall, I found that the visit to JamVybz was worth it because the food was delicious and the atmosphere very different. It wasn’t just a meal, it was an event.
